Japan is advancing its national green power initiatives, with Jera Co., Marubeni Corporation, and BP (BP, Financial) emerging as winners in the latest offshore wind auction. The government has awarded projects totaling approximately 1 gigawatt of capacity. A consortium including Jera will develop a project near Aomori Prefecture, while another consortium with Marubeni and BP will focus on a project near Yamagata Prefecture.

Japan, facing land scarcity, aims for wind energy to constitute 8% of its power mix by 2040 as part of its goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Currently, wind energy accounts for about 1% of the nation's power supply.
