Former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn has commented on the struggling Japanese automaker's pursuit of a deal with Honda, describing it as a sign of being in "panic mode." Ghosn criticized the potential merger, stating that finding synergies between Nissan and Honda would be challenging. He believes the talks indicate Nissan's desperation.
Honda recently confirmed that it is exploring various options, including a merger with Nissan, a capital alliance, or the creation of a holding company. Meanwhile, Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision, has reportedly put its interest in Nissan on hold.
Ghosn expressed skepticism about the benefits of a merger, noting that both companies operate similar brands and products in the same market. He suggested that Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry might be pushing Honda to proceed with the deal, despite the lack of industry logic. According to Ghosn, combining Nissan's short-term issues with Honda's long-term vision may not be practical.
